Herb Foods vs Herb Medicine

Most Americans have purchased an herbal remedy at a health food store one time or another. They read about their symptoms and discover that there is an herbal remedy for what they have. My background in naturopathic medicine educates fully on medicinal herbs, mostly Western. The Chinese also have a full pharmacopia of herbal remedies used to treat symptoms.

For example, you go to a Chinese doctor and he takes your pulse and looks at your tongue. Based on the pulse/tongue diagnoses he develops an herbal protocol, just for you. This process is applying Western thinking to an Eastern treatment. In ancient Chinese tradition, they ate herbs instead of took herbs. Herbalists were hired by royalty to develop herbal food formulas they could eat every day to lengthen their life and enhance their quality of life. The regenerative saying, “Live Long, Live Well”, encapsulates the goal of royalty. Beauty and longevity was of utmost importance.

I practiced with medicinal herbs on patients and used them to treat my own “illnesses”. Then I discovered that there is no such thing as illness, only imbalances. I know this to be true because when I stopped treating my illness and began to eat in such a way as to correct the underlying imbalance, the symptoms resolved naturally on their own. The same happened with my clients who chose the regenerative approach to addressing their imbalances.

Western examples of herbal foods are garlic, parsley, and cilantro. You can tell by tasting and smelling them that these plants are stronger than carrots and apples. Therein lies the difference between maintenance plants and herbal plants. Herbal plants are powerful and assist the body in re-balancing. They provide an enormous amount of nutrition compared to maintenance plants. Modern Chinese and Western medicine have been researching and isolating active ingredients in the herbs to make tinctures and capsules. Now a consumer can take something isolated for their symptoms.

Once the plant has been processed and its constituents isolated, it is no longer a food. It is a medicine with side effects and should not be taken for long periods of time. There is a place for medicinal herbs just like drugs in a crises situation. However, it takes over for the body and causes a reaction. Herbal foods assist the body to fend for itself and causes a response.

For long term vibrancy, youth, prevention and true healing of current imbalances, I believe herbal foods have proven to be the superior answer to all of these goals.

If you are an Athlete, Do you need to eat a high protein diet?

If you are an Athlete and don’t want to turn into a carnivore or down acidic protein shakes, this information might interest you. You have seen the propaganda support high protein diets for some time. How much protein does the body really need? Let’s look at a little physiology.

The mitochondria cells (energy factories) in your muscles make ATP (energy) from glucose! Glucose is the premier source of raw material for the muscles. Next is fat, last is protein. So physiologically we are set up as high glucose burning machines. Glucose comes from carbohydrates. Complex carbs give us a slow and even burn and simple carbs give us a fast burn with a crash to follow.

Complex carbs come from plants. And as long as they are uncooked, you will also get living enzymes and raw fiber.  Cook the plant, and you get simple carbs, no enzymes and no fiber. Athletes also need healthy fats such as in avocados, olive oil, fish skin, nuts and seeds.

The Journal of the AMA (American Medical Association) warned athletes long ago against taking protein supplements, stating, “Athletes need the same amount of protein foods as non-athletes. Protein does not increase strength. Indeed, it often takes greater energy to digest and metabolize the excess protein.”

Anatomical signs that we are not carnivores:

Flat molars for grinding plants, not pointy teeth for tearing flesh

Oblong stomach, not round

Long intestines for maximum absorption, not short intestines for rapid expulsion

Alkaline saliva with amylase enzyme which breaks down carbs instead of acidic saliva with HCL for protein break down

For a high fat, high protein and digestible lunch, try this salad: Spinach, tofu, avocado, broccoli (or cauliflower), olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh lemon juice.

For a healthy high fat and high protein snack try apple slices dipped in humus or raw almond butter.

For a great shake that offers the perfect amount of carbs, protein, and fiber in living form, try Vitashake which is an herbal food. Click here to visit myherbalfoods.com

ALLERGIES AND SINUS PROBLEMS IN THE DESERT

A lot of residents in Arizona, especially Phoenix suffer from chronic allergies or sinus infections. Sinus congestion and allergies can have a number of causes.  Obviously in both cases, the immune system is overactive.  You can tell by all the mucus that is being produced.  Allergies and chronic sinus congestion cause head aches, mental dullness, fatigue, and weakness.  Just think how much less oxygen your brain is getting when you can’t breathe!

Dry air, pollution, and non-native plants are the environmental causes that are difficult to control. So what can you do?

Start with your digestive system.  Your sinuses are part of the digestive system.  Yes, they’re in the head, but they connect to the nasopharynx in the back of your throat and on down to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.  SO if your liver is stagnated or your intestines are full of waste, up comes the mucus! As the Chinese would say, rising damp.

Drink lots of fluid.  Preferably herbal tea.  I drink Calli tea and Fortune Delight.  Eat digestible foods which will keep the foreign proteins out of your blood system.  These are what excite the immune system! Digest less during a day to rejuvenate the intestines.  In other words, eat digestible foods without waste product.  Nuplus and Vitashake are eth herbal foods that I eat every day.  They provide me with optimum nutrition without the waste.

Things you need to know before plunging into a weight loss program…

It’s a new year and the natural tendency is to begin a “new diet” to lose weight. By the time May rolls around the inspiration and focus has dwindled down to an occasional workout and salad. I have a personal history of putting forth a lot of effort to keep myself lean when I was in my 20’s. It is ironic that now I workout 90% less than I used to and put no effort into weight loss. And yet, I am substantially leaner than I ever was in those days of dieting and working out like a maniac.

What was the solution for me?

The first step was to nourish my body with the raw materials it needed to balance the systems. What if your weight gain is not due to calorie excess and you go on a calorie restrictive diet? Your metabolism will become sluggish and your nervous system and immune system will suffer. You may become irritable and lifeless due to the energy shortage in your body. Maybe your weight problem is more about Hormones such as estrogen and insulin. These two hormones, in excess cause the fat cells to grow. But maybe the hormones are out of balance because the liver does not have enough raw materials to break them down.

Weight loss is not complicated, it is incredibly simple and long lasting. Long term fat loss AND vitality is not the result of  high protein, low fat and low carb diets. Fat loss is about Abundance, Healing and Balance. It is about nourishing the body at a very deep level and allowing the body to find its own balance for all of its systems, not just the fat maintenance one. By narrowing your focus to just losing weight, you may be putting the other systems at risk, as mentioned above.

Virus Epidemic

Like all other epidemics, those with weak immune systems will be one of the victims of this latest swine infection that is going around. Not everyone who comes into contact with the germ will fall victim to the illness. The quickest way to build your immune system is to eat predominantly fresh fruits and vegetables with occasional grains, juice fresh herbs, fruits, and greens and to get plenty of rest. Sugar, meat, and stress are three of the biggest insults to the body. Purify and build your terrain and you will not be one of the statistics of the latest epidemic which modern medicine is still being stunned on.

Supplements or food?

If you are frustrated with treatments that fix one problem but cause another, or you take supplements that do nothing, you’ve come to the right place. “There is only one major disease, and that is malnutrition. All ailments and afflictions are directly traceable to this disease. Food crops grown on depleted soil produce malnourished bodies and disease preys on malnourished bodies.” D. W. Cavanough M.D., Cornell University. Instead of treating your disease and symptoms, Dr. Hendricks will teach you how to nourish, balance, and cleanse your way to optimal health.
